FaceBook closing organization pages such as libraries

TwitThis

It looks like FaceBook is now enforcing eliminating profiles such as the one I set up for our library using the reference desk e-mail address. I personally think this is pretty stupid. I got this message this morning in response to a tech support request I sent them. I asked them to convert it to my e-mail address for now and also asked that they reconsider the policy.

Hey,

This account has been disabled, as we do not allow profiles for organizations or other non-human entities. If you would like me to change the name on this account to your own, I can do that and reconfirm it. Thanks for your understanding.

You can still set up a group if you haven't already. I agree it is a little stupid. It makes sense for them to charge for-profits and politicians for such priveleges, but it does not make sense to crack down on non-profits related to the university.

From my understanding, one of the main purposes of this rule is to prevent students from setting up accounts under false names (like celebrities). This is a good rule for protecting people's identities, but they need to apply it in a logical fashion.

The network used to be polluted by fake people. There were about 9 Bill Gates, 6 Pamela Andersons, and countless Kegs, Beer bottles, and politicians. It's been a lot better since they cleaned it up. It keeps the value of the communication on the network high.
